From a child's very first day in reception, all the way through to Year 6 we support children to make the right 'CHOICES' to enable them to grow into well-rounded, motivated individual.


In Year 1 we offer learning opportunities and support to all children to ensure they reach their potential in all areas of the National Curriculum. We help the children to develop the confidence and skills to begin to explore the world around them using their senses and to begin to ask questions about what they are learning and how it links to the world around them. In Year 1, we have a positive learning attitude and work hard to achieve our personal goals and targets.  We all try to make the right 'CHOICES' and give a 100% in everything we do. In Year 1 we like to work as a team supporting each other as we learn and succeed together.

Classroom Environment

Year 1 has a lovely open-plan classroom which has a range of different areas to be accessed throughout the day. These area allow the children to develop their knowledge and understand independently, applying their reading, writing and maths skills across a range of tasks. The areas help reinforce previous learning.


 We have a writing area which changes themes throughout the year. The themes range from linking independent learning with foundation subjects topic, the interests of the children or special festival/events throughout the year.

We have a variety of books children can share with each other and staff. Our children love reading in the reading corner during guided reading times and during independent learning time.

We have challenge tables that Year 1 children can independently access throughout the day, the challenges are a mix of learning games and activities that will reinforce their learning.


At Rift House we aim for your child to participate in a broad curriculum. Our timetable shows various opportunities that your child will access daily, including opportunities for mindfulness through Primary Movement and energisers.


Topics Over the Year

English: over the year we will be studying Fiction, Non-fiction and Poetry. This includes adventures stories, stories with a familiar setting, traditional tales and focusing on a famous author. Non-fiction texts include reports,  recounts and instructions. When studying poetry, we explore poems that use rhyme.

Maths: over the year we will be studying place Value, addition and subtraction. Shape, measure length and height, measure weight and volume, multiplication and division, fractions, position and direction, time and money

P.E. in Year 1

Science in Year 1

Whilst learning about Animals including humans we decided to investigate is the oldest child in Year 1 the tallest. We shared our birthday information, measured each other then looked at the information. We can now confirm that the oldest child in Year 1 is not the tallest! Just for now, measurements may change throughout the year.

English in Year 1

We had a fantastic day visiting Summerhill Country Park, we explored the environment whilst learning about the story Stickman.

Art in Year 1

We have really enjoyed learning new skills in our art lessons, we learnt about the illustrator Axel Scheffler and researched how he created the characters for Julia Donaldson books. We then practised collage skills and created our very own woodland characters.


Design Technology in Year 1

What fun we have had making funny faces for our very first year 1 Design Technology project. The children developed their cutting and sewing skills as well as showing off their creative ideas for their face design.

History in Year 1

We have been learning about seaside holidays from the past the children researched bathing machines, what they were and why people used them. We then had lots of fun creating own bathing machines 

English in Year 1

We have been reading the story Burglar Bill. We really enjoyed the story, discussing Burglar Bill actions and how he can make the right choices. We also learnt about alteration and then innovated the story by changing the characters names. We created Burglar Bob and Burglar Belle who decided to be better people and change careers. We set ourselves the task of if you could add one more page what would happen? Have a look at everyone’s wonder ideas from the book.


Computing in Year 1

We have had lots of fun learning about programming. We have programmed the robot cars and used the Beebot app to develop our programming skills.


R.E. in Year 1

We have been very busy learning about Easter, what happened and why it is an important celebration for Christians. Look at our fantastic Easter artwork!



  • Daily Routine in Year 1

    School starts at 8:45am and finishes at 3:05pm every week day.

    Staff will be available before and after school, if you have any questions, concerns, or queries please don’t hesitate to talk to us.

    Please let us know in advance if your child is going to be picked up by someone else than the agreed adults.


    Reading Bags

    Every Friday each child will receive a new reading book appropriate for their reading level.

    Please write a short comment in your child's reading record each time they are reading. Please complete the reading records at least 3 times a week.  Books are changed on a Friday. Child should bring their reading bag including books and record every day.


    PE Kits – P.E. lessons are every Tuesday and Friday. P.E. kit should include a white PE T Shirt, black Shorts, socks and trainers.



    Every Monday we set a spelling challenge to be completed and returned to school on Friday.
